Why the WTA Finals moved from Riyadh to Indian Wells
The WTA Finals was played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2024 and 2025. On July 1, 2026, the WTA announced the move to Indian Wells: together with the Saudi Tennis Federation it agreed to end the hosting arrangement early. The sources we checked do not agree on the reason, so we are not giving one.
Who is in the field: qualified players as of Oct. 6
The top eight in the Race to the WTA Finals, which adds up the season's ranking points, qualify. As of Oct. 6, two players are in and six spots are open:
- Elena Rybakina. The world No. 1 and defending champion. She was the first to lock up a spot.
- Aryna Sabalenka. The second to qualify, and it is her sixth straight year in the field. She won the Indian Wells title in March 2026 in a final against Rybakina.
According to the tournament, in early October Pegula, Andreeva, Gauff, Svitolina, Muchova, Kostyuk and Swiatek were fighting for the rest, and the two WTA 1000 events in Asia (Beijing and Wuhan) are the last big batch of points.
The defending champion
Rybakina won the 2025 edition, played in Riyadh, by beating Sabalenka 6-3, 7-6(0) in the final. She went undefeated (5-0) and earned $5,235,000, the biggest payout in the history of women's sports. The 2026 prize pool is not confirmed in official sources, so we are not listing one.
Format and keys to the tournament
- Two groups of four. Each player faces the other three; the top two advance and the semifinals cross over between groups.
- Best-of-three sets. Losing the opener knocks no one out: the record across three matches is what counts.
- One court, a new venue. Conditions are equal for everyone, but there is no track record for this event on that court, so the adjustment shows up in the first matches. And in the last group match, a player who has already qualified may play with a different motivation than one who needs the win.
Favorites often carry short odds: convert the price to implied probability and ask whether the percentage is realistic.
Tennis betting markets: what you can bet on at the WTA Finals
The most common markets; none is a sure thing. A refresher on the numbers is in our guide to betting odds:
- Moneyline (match winner). Who wins; no draws in tennis. If a player retires, each sportsbook has its own rule (some void the bet), so read it first. In American odds, -150 implies 60% and +130 implies about 43.5%.
- Set betting and total sets. In a best-of-three match, 2-0 or 2-1. «Over 2.5 sets» means a third set is played.
- Total games (over/under). A bet on the combined games in the match; the sportsbook sets the line by how close it expects the match to be.
- Games spread (handicap). A head start in games is added or subtracted. At -3.5, the favorite must win by four games or more across all sets.
- Group winner and tournament winner (futures). Long-term bets that pay out at the end of the tournament.
To compare a price with your own estimate: value betting. To avoid over-betting: what a bankroll is.
What gambeta's AI publishes in tennis (and what happens with the WTA Finals)
gambeta's AI publishes for free, on the home page, the tennis picks for today's ATP and WTA matches that have market odds: the pick, the odds, the confidence level and a suggested stake. How it builds them and how to read one is in the AI tennis predictions guide and AI for tennis; how it has done, pick by pick, is in the verified track record (in Spanish).
What we can say today about the WTA Finals: the AI publishes a pick only when a match has odds in its data source, and as of Oct. 6, 2026 that source does not carry a WTA Finals market. If it opens one, the picks go on the home page and we will say so here. If not, the tournament may go without an AI pick: no pick means no pick. For the men's year-end event, see the ATP Finals in Turin.
