Liga MX playoff schedule: Apertura 2026 Liguilla dates
The Apertura 2026 regular season has 17 matchdays and wraps up the weekend of November 20 to 22. From there, the Liguilla runs like this:
| Round | Dates | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Matchday 17 (last of the regular season) | Fri, Nov. 20 to Sun, Nov. 22 | Locks in the eight playoff teams and the seeding |
| Quarterfinals, first leg | Wed, Nov. 25 and Thu, Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving) | 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 |
| Quarterfinals, second leg | Sat, Nov. 28 and Sun, Nov. 29 | The higher seed hosts the second leg |
| Semifinals (two legs) | Wed, Dec. 2 to Sun, Dec. 6 | Reseeded by the table: best remaining seed vs. worst, the other two face off |
| Final (two legs) | Thu, Dec. 10 and Sun, Dec. 13 | Level on aggregate: extra time, then penalties |
| Final, if Toluca gets there | Thu, Dec. 24 and Sun, Dec. 27 | Pushed back for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup |
Kickoff times for each series are set once the matchups are known. Mexico City has not used daylight saving time since 2022, so once the US falls back on Sunday, November 1, Mexico City runs on the same clock as US Central Time: add one hour for the East Coast and subtract two for the West Coast.
| Mexico City / Central (CT) | Eastern (ET) | Pacific (PT) |
|---|---|---|
| 5:00 p.m. | 6:00 p.m. | 3:00 p.m. |

| 9:00 p.m. | 10:00 p.m. | 7:00 p.m. |
What is the Liguilla? How the Liga MX playoffs work
Liga MX splits its season into two short tournaments, the Apertura in the fall and the Clausura in the spring, and crowns a champion in each one. Every tournament has a regular season (in Mexico, the fase regular) in which each of the 18 clubs plays every other club once, and then a knockout phase that Mexico calls the Liguilla: what the NFL, the NBA or MLS call the playoffs, and the name you will see on most US sportsbook apps (“Liga MX playoffs”).
The Apertura 2026 brings back the classic format. Liga MX scrapped the Play-In at its owners' meeting in April 2026: the top eight teams in the overall table qualify directly for the quarterfinals, and there is no second chance for ninth place and below. Every round is a two-leg, home-and-away series. The rules that matter for betting:
- In the quarterfinals and semifinals, a tie on aggregate goes to the higher seed. There is no extra time and no penalty shootout: if the 180-minute aggregate score is level, the team that finished higher in the regular-season table advances. The higher seed also plays the second leg at home.
- The semifinals are reseeded. The four teams left are ranked again by their regular-season finish: the top seed plays the fourth and the second plays the third.
- The final has no seeding edge. If the aggregate is level, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played and, if it is still tied, penalties decide the title.
That has two consequences for bettors. First, the match result (the three-way moneyline, or 1X2) is settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, which is not the same bet as “to advance” or “to win the title”, markets that look at the whole series. Second, in the second leg the higher seed only needs to stay level on aggregate, so the lower seed is forced to come out and chase the game. That changes the game plan and, with it, the goal markets; sportsbooks know it too and price it into the odds.
Liga MX standings: who is in the playoff race
With seven matchdays left, the race for the eight spots (and for a high seed, which counts in the Liguilla) is wide open.
After Matchday 10, heading into the October FIFA international break, Toluca and América were tied at the top with 20 points (América with a game in hand against Tijuana), followed by Chivas with 18. Querétaro, León, Atlas, Cruz Azul and Tijuana rounded out the top eight. Matchday 11 is played Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11, so there are seven rounds left and the table will move a lot. This page is updated with the eight playoff teams once Matchday 17 ends.
Cruz Azul, the defending champions
Cruz Azul won the Clausura 2026: a 0-0 draw in the first leg against Pumas and a 2-1 win in the second leg on May 24, with a stoppage-time winner from Carlos Rotondi. It was the club's 10th league title and ended a drought of almost five years.
Toluca, the team with two calendars
Toluca won both 2025 titles (the Clausura against América and the Apertura on a 9-8 penalty shootout against Tigres) and on May 30, 2026 lifted the Concacaf Champions Cup, again on penalties against Tigres. That title sends them to the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, where they face the winner of the Copa Libertadores. Toluca starts that tournament on December 9, which is why Liga MX would move the final to December 24 and 27 if Toluca makes it.
Keys to the Liguilla
- Seeding pays twice. Finishing higher means hosting the second leg and winning any tie on aggregate in the quarterfinals and semifinals. The last regular-season rounds are not a formality for teams already in.
- Home field and altitude. Home advantage is strong in Mexican soccer, and the altitude in Toluca, Pachuca or Mexico City is a real factor for visitors. But the market already prices it in: home field alone does not make a bet good value.
- The December schedule. Toluca plays the Intercontinental Cup from December 9; if they are still alive in the Liguilla, how they manage the squad between both competitions is worth watching.
- Referees and injuries. They are confirmed a few days before each series. For card markets, the referee is the single most important input.
Liga MX playoff betting: which markets can offer value
The Liguilla is the most bet-on event in Mexican soccer, and the main lines are sharp. Finding a value bet (+EV) is possible, but harder than in a regular-season round. What is worth a look, and why:
- Match or series. Before you bet, check whether you are betting on the 90-minute result or on who advances. In a first leg, a draw can be a good result for the higher seed, and the draw price may or may not reflect it. The only way to know is to convert the odds into implied probability and compare it with your own: in American odds, +150 implies 40% and -150 implies 60%.
- Spread and draw no bet. If you like a team but do not want to depend on the draw, the Asian handicap (the soccer spread) and draw no bet each cover it in a different way: with draw no bet, a draw refunds your stake.
- Totals and both teams to score. Do not assume the first leg will be tight and the second one open. Before betting the over/under 2.5 goals or both teams to score, look at each team's expected goals (xG) in the tournament and at what result each side needs.
- Live betting. In a two-leg series, one goal changes what each team needs and the odds move in seconds. If you bet live, decide your stake beforehand.
None of these is a sure thing. If you bet, only where it is legal for you, use money you can afford to lose and stick to a bankroll set in advance.
What gambeta's AI will publish for the Liguilla
gambeta's AI analyzes the Liga MX matches that have market odds, playoffs included: it compares its own probability estimate with the one implied by the sportsbook's price and, when it finds an edge and the pick passes its filter, publishes it for free on the home page, with the odds, the confidence level and a preview explaining the reasoning. Mexican soccer picks are collected in the Liga MX predictions hub.
No value, no pick: an entire series may go without one. How the AI has done in Liga MX so far is explained in the AI Liga MX predictions guide, and every pick, win or lose, stays in the public verified track record (in Spanish). The High Stake is separate: a single paid pick chosen by hand by a person.
📅 This page is updated after Matchday 17 (November 22) with the eight playoff teams and the quarterfinal matchups, and after every round with kickoff times in Mexico City, ET and PT and, if there are any, the AI's picks. If you also follow soccer north of the border, the AI MLS predictions cover the MLS season too.
Liga MX playoffs: frequently asked questions
When do the Liga MX playoffs start in 2026?
The Apertura 2026 regular season ends on Sunday, November 22 with Matchday 17. The quarterfinal first legs are on Wednesday, November 25 and Thursday, November 26, and the second legs on Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29.
Is the Liguilla the same as the Liga MX playoffs?
Yes. Liguilla is the name used in Mexico for the knockout phase of each tournament, what US media and sportsbook apps call the Liga MX playoffs. In the Apertura 2026 it is played by the top eight teams of the regular season, starting with the quarterfinals.
When does the Liga MX regular season end?
The Apertura 2026 regular season has 17 matchdays and ends on Sunday, November 22. That sets the eight playoff teams and the quarterfinal matchups: 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5.
When is the Liga MX final 2026?
The first leg is on Thursday, December 10 and the second leg on Sunday, December 13. If Toluca reaches the final, it moves to Thursday, December 24 and Sunday, December 27, because Toluca plays the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Is there a Play-In in the Apertura 2026?
No. Liga MX scrapped it: the top eight teams in the overall table after 17 matchdays go straight to the quarterfinals.
What happens if a Liguilla series is tied on aggregate?
In the quarterfinals and semifinals there is no extra time and no shootout: the higher seed from the regular-season table advances. The final does go to two 15-minute periods of extra time and then penalties. Bets on the match result (moneyline or 1X2) are settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
What time are Liga MX playoff games in ET and PT?
Kickoff times are confirmed once each series is set. From November 1, Mexico City is on the same clock as US Central Time, so add one hour for ET and subtract two for PT: a 7:00 p.m. kickoff in Mexico City is 8:00 p.m. ET and 5:00 p.m. PT.
Who is the defending Liga MX champion?
Cruz Azul, winners of the Clausura 2026: 0-0 in the first leg and 2-1 in the second leg against Pumas on May 24, 2026. It was their 10th league title.
Will gambeta publish Liga MX playoff picks?
Only for matches where the AI finds value in the odds. When it does, the pick is published for free on the home page and in the Liga MX hub, with its preview, and it stays in the public record, win or lose. No pick is guaranteed.
