Is betting legal in Nigeria? What our sources say

According to Mondaq and iGamingFuture, on 22 November 2024 the Supreme Court of Nigeria ruled in a case brought by Lagos State that the National Lottery Act 2005 is unenforceable in the states (except the FCT), placing lotteries, betting and gaming within state legislative competence. According to iGaming Business, at least 10 states already had gaming laws before the ruling and others are legislating. According to Focus Gaming News, the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) licenses sports betting, and the FCT lottery office disputes Lagos's claim of exclusive authority, so the federal/state picture is still contested.

Regulator: State gaming regulators, mainly Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA); National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) now limited to the FCT according to Mondaq.

Most-followed local competition: Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
