How the AI picks playoff baseball
The model is the same one that went 83-61 in the regular season, but October changes what matters most:
- Starting pitching matters more. Rotations shrink to three or four arms, so the aces pitch more often. The AI weighs each starter’s recent form, WHIP and strikeouts, not just the season ERA.
- The bullpen decides close games. With days off between games, the best relievers are available almost every night. A tired or thin bullpen is one of the biggest red flags in a short series.
- Home field is worth less than people think. Home teams win a bit more than half of playoff games, and the market usually prices that in already.
- Value against the price, not the favorite. The AI compares its own win probability with the probability implied by the odds and only picks when there is a gap. That is why many of its picks are underdogs around 2.20.
- No big favorites. The shortest moneyline price the AI took all season was 1.50: laying a big price to win little leaves no room for error in a sport this random.
