Odds are the language of betting. If you don't fully understand them, you're betting blind. The good news is the concept is simple and, once you master it, you start to see opportunities where before you only saw numbers.
What are odds?
Odds are the price the bookmaker pays for every unit staked in the event your selection wins. Odds of 2.00 mean that if you bet $1,000, you receive $2,000 (a net profit of $1,000). Odds reflect the probability the bookmaker assigns to each outcome, plus its profit margin.
How to convert odds into probabilities
The conversion is straightforward: implied probability = 1 / odds. Odds of 2.00 imply 50%. Odds of 1.50 imply 66.7%. Odds of 3.00 imply 33.3%. But here's the trick: the sum of all the implied probabilities in a match doesn't add up to 100% but to more (for example 105% or 107%). That difference is the bookmaker's margin.
The concept of expected value
A bet has positive value when your probability estimate is higher than the implied probability of the odds. If you believe a team has a 60% chance of winning but the odds imply only 50%, you have a value bet. Over the long run, betting with positive value is the only strategy that generates sustainable profit.
A step-by-step practical example
Let's say a match where the home side is priced at odds of 2.20. First step: the implied probability is 1 / 2.20 = 45.5%. Second step: your analysis (or the AI) estimates the home side actually has a 55% real chance of winning. Third step: since 55% is greater than 45.5%, there is positive value. The expected value of betting $1,000 would be: 0.55 × $1,200 profit − 0.45 × $1,000 loss = +$210 expected for every $1,000 staked. That positive number is the signal that, repeated many times, the bet is profitable.
How gambeta.ai's AI calculates probabilities
The gambeta.ai system combines historical statistics, recent form, the quality gap between teams and home/away condition to estimate probabilities independent of the bookmakers. It then compares those probabilities with the available odds and flags where there is real value.
The 1-6 confidence level
The gambeta.ai confidence indicator (from 1 to 6) directly reflects how large and solid that value edge is. A pick with 6/6 confidence indicates that the difference between the probability estimated by the AI and the implied probability of the odds is significant and backed by multiple statistical indicators.
Decimal, fractional and American odds
In Argentina and Spain we use decimal odds (the most intuitive system). Fractional odds are used in the United Kingdom (2/1 = 3.00 in decimal). American odds are used in the US (+200 = 3.00, -150 = 1.67). gambeta.ai always shows odds in decimal format for maximum clarity.
